Thank You Grandpa Hawkins! (Hema)

When I first met Grandpa he shared the story of his stop in Tongatapu during WWII. While serving on board the USS Enterprise in the South Pacific the ship was hit by an enemy torpedo and was taking on water. Grandpa said they used just about anything they could find, including mattresses, and blankets to patch the hole until they could get to friendly waters to make repairs. They managed to make it to the island of Tonga where they brought the ship in as close to shore during high tide. When the tide went out the boat was left grounded on its side which allowed for appropriate repairs to be made. When the tide returned it lifted the newly patched ship right up and they were able to return to Hawaii for permanent repairs. Grandpa was able to do some sight seeing while in Tonga. He spoke about how the Women were housed in a gated area that was guarded by several very large Tongan warriors. Grandpa was able to rent a bicycle for a couple of cents and then bought a bunch of bananas for a nickel. While exploring the island he heard one of the local children whistling a familiar tune... "you are my sunshine". He struck up a conversation with the young lady, who had learned English and the song from American missionaries that were teaching in the local schools. He was soon back on the ship and headed back into the war. Grandpa's experience in Tonga somehow made me feel more comfortable and close to him. When Becky and I visited Tonga in 2004, while touring the cultural center and museum, we came across a old black and white photo of Grandpa's torpedoed ship on its side at low tide. At that moment I felt an endearing love for Grandpa from halfway across the world. Grandpa Hawkins was an awesome example to me and I thank him for his influence in my life, especially for raising a righteous posterity that includes my dear wife. My knowledge of the gospel brings me hope and peace, but you will be missed. I am glad that some of my children have had the pleasure of knowing you. Ofa Lahi Atu Grandpa Hawkins. -- Hema
